Bergdorf Goodman‘s newest fine dining experience, Goodman’s Bar, is an Art Deco-inspired space on the store’s men’s floor. The iconic department store is joining the retail café scene with the launch of this luxury bar. The café, which has a European flair, is finally in full operation.
Susan Homan, Bergdorf Goodman‘s VP of Store Interior Design, and Mika Raja, Director of Architecture and Planning, played a significant role in the design, drawing inspiration from the iconic store’s Art Deco façade as well as Central Park’s natural beauty. “We placed the bar at the actual ‘heart’ of the Men’s Store, cosy and tucked away, yet still perched within eyesight and earshot of the action, in the eye of our rotunda,” says Linda Fargo, SVP, Fashion Office and Store Presentation. “Like the global marketplace we curate from to fill our stores at Bergdorf Goodman’s, there are numerous and collected international design influences built into the bar. For Bergdorf Goodman’s, it’s always in the mix, done through our signature BG taste lens.”
“The concept, as well as the environment and interior, are inspired by the timeless bars and cafés you see in Paris, Vienna, and Milan,” Bergdorf Goodman’s fashion director, Bruce Pask, tells Galerie. “It’s like those special neighbourhood in-the-know spots where you can enjoy the best coffee and a paper, stop in with coworkers for a lunch meeting and your favourite tagliatelle, and then after-work aperitivi and wine from an obscure, exciting vintner.”
Vintage Franz Schuster chairs and wingback seating by Tom Dixon, the latter encircling custom backgammon tables, offer a sophisticated space for respite. A custom hand-painted mural by de Gournay creates a striking backdrop, while sculptural Apparatus luxury lighting enhances the distinguished ambience. “The mural is certainly the centrepiece of the restaurant,” says Bergdorf Goodman’s SVP Fashion Office and Store Presentation, Linda Fargo.
A taste of New York was also incorporated into the interior design scheme. “We asked de Gournay, the world-class and extraordinary scenic mural supplier, with whom we worked on and off with for over 20 years, to create a custom mural as a centrepiece of Central Park and embedded with iconic landmark drawings,” says Fargo. “Bergdorf’s has a long history of sharing that vista and it serves as a reminder of where we are in and brings the outside in.”
The company teamed up with Michelin-starred chef Austin Johnson and Master Sommelier Dustin Wilson to bring the menu to life. Along with an impressive selection of wine and cocktails, the menu includes everything from black truffle taglioni to beef tartare with crispy sunchoke, tomato confit, and smoked egg yolk.
