The Hope Spinel, the 50.14 carat octagonal cut stone, has a memorable and fascinating history, stating on the 19th century, this gem often mistaken for a ruby, was owned by the rich collector, Henry Philipe Hope.
Henry who’s family were wealthy like dynasty, guarded this and other very precious stones in a drawer. Hope Spinel, is not so popular to the public, but the first time that this rare and so special stone was put up for autction, was sold in Christie’s for 1.060 pounds which in today money would be the value of 80.00 pounds. Is it the story or the gem that makes this jewel so wanted and so attractive to the collectors?
Well, it’s both, the few cases that this stone was put in auction; make people to eager for the moment when they will have the possibility to purchase this treasure. Furthermore, the 50 carats size, clearness, colors, and overall perfection of this stone, make it similar with no other.
So, after 98 years everyone is talking about the historical gem, that on the late of September, at the Bonhams Fine Jewellery in London, was auctioned for 962.500 setting a new world record as the most expensive gem ever sold in auction.
